Using Search or Browse Results (continued)

Learning to navigate the eBay website

By Aron Hsiao, About.com

Item details are shown in columns.

Sale items in search or browse results appear one after another down the page, with relevant data arranged in columns:

  • Item picture. A small image of the item for sale or a camera icon shows that an image of the item is available if or when you choose to view its listing.

  • Item title. The "Item Title" gives the name or a brief description for the item. Read it carefully, since a "Vintage Leica camera and lens" is significantly different from a "Vintage Leica camera and lens (brochure)."

  • Number of bids. If bids have been placed on the item, the number of bids is shown. A dash (-) means that there have been no bids yet.

  • Price. The item price shows the current bid value of the item. Note that this is not the final price of the item, since more bids may be placed before the auction ends.

  • Shipping costs. The base cost of shipping for each item shows the amount to be added to the winning bid for shipping once the purchase has been made.

  • Time remaining in the auction. "Time Left" shows how much time remains before the auction in question closes or the listing ends. An item that closes with bids in place is sold to the highest bidder. An item receiving no bids before closing is removed from the listings. The seller is free to list the item for sale again if he or she choses to do so.

To view more details about an item, or bid on or buy it if you decide you're interested in purchasing it, click on the item's title. You'll be taken to the listing page for the item in question, where you can read more about it and the terms of the auction, as well as place a bid if you so desire.

Advanced Searching or Browsing

You'll notice that there's a great deal more to the listing pages than just these items. In particular, the are sorting and filtering options also shown on results pages can help you to narrow and organize the list of items you're browsing. Details on using these features of the eBay website can be found in Buying Effectively and Searching Effectively.
