Offering Third-Party Warranty Coverage to Buyers
Offer yourself and your buyers a little peace of mind

By , About.com Guide

eBay’s PayPal service offers buyers “protection” for purchases made through PayPal, but this protection is generally limited to the time of the transaction, protecting buyers in cases of nondelivery or misrepresented goods. As a seller, however, it’s sometimes helpful to be able more complete forms of protection—like extended warranty protection—to your buyers or bidders. The eBay-affiliated SquareTrade service makes this possible through their CarePlus product, as do the eBay-affiliated N.E.W. Customer Service Companies, Inc. Both programs are easy and free for sellers, and both make it possible to offer warranties for new and used goods.

About SquareTrade CarePlus Warranties

SquareTrade can offer your bidders or buyers warranty protection for just about any type of electronics or computing item that can be sold on eBay. This protection must be purchased by your bidder or buyer, like an extended warranty at a retail consumer electronics store. Sellers who use SquareTrade to offer warranties do so for a number of reasons:

  • Reassurance to the buyer. The ability to offer warranty coverage on the items you sell shows prospective buyers that you are a serious, full-service seller who is willing and able to guarantee the products that you sell for a nominal fee.

  • Reduction is return hassles. Buyers whose items are covered by a SquareTrade warranty can obtain service that way, meaning that you no longer have to cope with any malfuction or return issues weeks or months after a sale was made.

  • Extra commission-based income. Because SquareTrade pays commission on the warranties you sell, offering SquareTrade warranties in your eBay auctions can be a nice way to generate extra revenue with a percentage of your sales.

  • Essentially automatic operation. After joining SquareTrade’s CarePlus program (there is no charge for this), operation is essentially automatic—the option to purchase a CarePlus warranty is automatically added to every listing for which warranty coverage is available, making warranties available to your buyers when possible without any extra work on your part. Seller commissions are from 15 to 40 percent of warranty revenue, depending on the volume of warranties sold.

With an average cost to the buyer of 10 percent of the auction value, many sellers—especially sellers who do some amount of volume in electronics or computing equipment—find SquareTrade’s CarePlus program to be a revenue-enhancing component of their business practices.

About the N.E.W. Customer Service Companies Warranties

eBay also maintains a relationship with the N.E.W. Customer Service Companies, Inc. to help sellers to offer warranty coverage on a variety of items, including electronics and computing items as well as some kinds of jewelry and some musical instruments. In many ways, the N.E.W. warranty program is similar to the SquareTrade program from the seller’s perspective.

  • Warranty coverage emblem and link in auctions. Like the SquareTrade CarePlus offer, the N.E.W. program adds options to your listings that show buyers your commitment to long-term customer satisfaction.

  • Broader variety of covered items. The N.E.W. products are able to cover a slightly broader variety of goods, making the offering of warranty coverage available to an even greater number of sellers.

  • Also commission-based. The N.E.W. program also offers commissions income to sellers for whose items warranties are purchased.

  • Less automatic operation. N.E.W. warranty sellers will need to cut and paste a snippet of HTML code into each auction listing to enable warranty coverage to be bought for the items in question. Sellers must take care to verify that the item in question is eligible for warranty coverage according to the terms of the product. Visit the program overview to learn about pricing for buyers and commission rates for sellers.

Whichever warranty product you choose to offer to your customers, it’s likely to enhance your revenue and reduce your workload in coping with complaints and return issues over the medium and long terms. Warranty coverage options also offer to your buyers a valuable service that can drive repeat sales.
