ID Verified

By Aron Hsiao, About.com

Definition: "ID Verify" is an identity certification program operated by eBay to help eBay members to trust one another. An eBay seller can become ID Verified by paying a small fee and providing security-oriented personal information to eBay (including, amongst other things, a birthdate and drivers license number).

With this information, eBay performs a minimal background check on the seller in question and asks the seller to answer questions about themselves that only they should know. If the seller is able to answer such questions, eBay will certify that the person in question is indeed who they "claim" to be and that they have provided significant personal identification information to eBay.

In rare cases, eBay may require the seller to fax additional information, including photocopies of the drivers license in question, other types of identifying documents issued by official agencies, or other similar types of personal documentation.

Once a seller has been ID Verified, the "ID Verified" logo (a small red check mark in a gray circle) appears next to their user ID wherever it appears on the eBay website.

ID Verification enables eBay members to participate in all of the following eBay programs or to use the following eBay features (though there may be alternative ways to qualify in some cases).

  • eBay Stores selling
  • Selling with Buy It Now and Best Offer listing upgrades
  • Selling with Multiple Item and Fixed Price listing formats
