Name Your Own price with Best Offer

Get a better deal by offering a seller your own price for an item

By

Shoppers often imagine eBay to be a place where prices are set by others. In auction format listings, prices are set by what competing bidders are willing to bid for an item. In fixed-price format listings, prices are set by the seller.

In fact, there are another class of listings on eBay in which shoppers have the flexibility to offer their own price for an item. When you make such an offer using eBay's "best offer" option, the item's seller reviews the price you're willing to pay and can either accept the offer, reject the offer, or make a counter-bid.

1. Learn to identify "Best Offer" listings.

Here's how to identify and find listings for which sellers are willing to entertain offers, and how to submit an offer once you've found a listing you're interested in. When you see the "Buy It Now or Best Offer" image next to an item in your search results, you know that the seller in question is willing to entertain offers from buyers like you.

2. Use the "Refine Search" tool to help you find "Best Offer" listings.

To locate items for which sellers are willing to accept offers, scroll down until you see the "Preferences" box to the left of your search results. Click the "Choose more..." link at the bottom of the box to open a popup where you can change your search preferences.

3. In the preference pop-up, check the "Accepts best offer" box.

When you see the pop-up asking you to set your search preferences, check the box labeled "Accepts best offer" and then click the "Go" button near the bottom-right of the pop-up. eBay will re-run your most recent search, this time showing you only items for which sellers are willing to entertain offers.

4. When you find the item you want, click the "Make Offer" button.

Browse through the item listings until you find the item that you want. Then, with the listing open, look for the "Make Offer" button, located just below the "Buy It Now" button. Click the "Make Offer" button and you'll be taken to a new page where you can enter the amount of your offer.

5. Review and confirm your offer.

Once you've entered the amount of your offer, click the "Review Offer" button. eBay will show you a confirmation page to verify that you really want to place the offer in question. If you're sure you want to make this offer, click the "Submit Offer" button.

Within a day or two (and sometimes almost immediately), you'll hear back from the seller with a response to your offer. If the seller accepts, the item is yours! Pay for the auction like any other and you'll receive your item in the mail!
