eBay News: Selling Manager Meets Social Networking

Thursday April 9, 2009
eBay's latest developers program newsletter provides more details on the new selling manager "app store" capabilities that eBay is hoping users will embrace. The program is now entering beta and to encourage developers, eBay is waving revenue share requirements until next year.

Most interesting are the details on eBay's embrace of OpenSocial gadgets and the fact that they're one of the backbones of the new selling manager. eBay really is, therefore, going fully "Web 2.0," complete with social networking features. If eBay is able to get individual users to contribute code and "enhance" eBay to serve a wide variety of ideas and needs, a move like this one could turn eBay into an entirely new kind of ecommerce company.

Unanswered is the question of how this dovetails with the strategy recently announced at analyst day, which paradoxically nudges eBay away from community-based models and individual sellers, toward much more stodgy, traditional formats.
